Viva Jellysox!

Colin’s great friend Jez Jellysox unwittingly arouses the dislike of Ulrika Spitz, the sister of the famous speedway rider Hugo Spitz. Jez, under the influence of the phoenix, performs a breath-taking Wall of Death ride on a motorbike all around her. Jez’s girlfriend is kidnapped, and he enlists Colin and M to help track her down. Can they find her? Will the two sweethearts finally get to marry? And what is M doing with an Elvis wig?

Two days after their return from Camelot and their adventure at the court of King Arthur Olivia said to Colin, “I’m really rather worried about Old Jellysox. He could be getting himself into a bit of a pickle.

“Why?” asked Colin, who was still savouring the exploits of Jez Jellysox as a Knight of the Round Table.

“Don’t you notice anything?” said Olivia exasperatedly.

“Not everything,” admitted Colin. “What’s up?”

“Well, you know he texted us that he’s bringing a lady friend to meet us today?”

Colin nodded. “Yes. After work. So what?”

“Well, Abigail...”

“Oh, Mrs. Biggle!” She was still not one of Colin’s favourite people, although she seemed to have mellowed due no doubt to the influence of the magic phoenix bookmark.

His wife, ignoring the interruption, carried on, “Abigail told me that someone else may have got an eye on him.”

“Really?” said Colin. “After all these years without a girlfriend suddenly he comes up with two!”

This time it was Olivia, who nodded. “Yes, Abi says the other woman’s Swedish or Dutch. Her name is Greta but Abi calls her Flirty Gertie and thinks she’s not to be trusted.

“Oh, that’s great coming from Abi Biggle considering what she was once like!” snapped Colin.

“Ah, but our friend the phoenix seems to have improved her in all sorts of ways.”

At that moment her thoughts were interrupted by something outside that caught her eye. ‘What on earth is he doing?’ she wondered. M, their computer-generated emu, invisible to everyone except certain members of their family, was tearing round and round in circles in the garden. Over his eyes he was wearing what looked like motor-cycle goggles.

As ever, Colin, amused by this new stunt said, “Not to worry. He’s playing at being a speedway rider. He saw it on T.V. last night.”

Olivia was not convinced, so she said, “But he hasn’t got a motor-bike!”

“I know,” agreed Colin. “That’s what we have to worry about. He’s bound to get one somehow sometime.” Then, struck by an alarming afterthought, he added, “And the most dangerous thing about speedway bikes is that they don’t have any brakes!”

This was true, and at that very moment Jez Jellysox was embarking on a project, which could have dire consequences for him. He was only about 2 miles away from Olivia and Colin’s house. He was at the local speedway stadium, and he was not very happy, for he had just met someone far worse than the objectionable person Abigail Biggle had once been.

“I dare you, Jellysox!” sneered Ulrika Spitz. “By the way, that is a really stupid name.”

“Oh, no, I’d rather not,” declined Jez Jellysoz rather shyly.
